the great barrier reef's hidden gem: north west island

7.5km off the coast of queensland lies north west island, a pristine portal into a little-known portion of the iconic great barrier reef. it’s a real hidden gem, with white sandy beaches, glass top waters, and a some of the region’s best wildlife. the tiny island lies in the Capricorn Bunker Group at the southernmost part of the Great Barrier Reef, and truly feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere - think castaway meets survivor. even with other campers around, there’s enough space and separation to feel like you’re on your own private island.

the ferry ride to the island is an experience in itself, with luxe showers and bathrooms with floor to ceiling views of the ocean. cruising over turquoise waters, travellers pass schools of fish, turtles, and even humpback whales if they’re lucky.

part of the north west island experience, of course, is camping. nestled amongst a pisonia forest, the island features a designated camping area with toilet facilities, fuel storage, and compressor bunkers. the site offers the unique experience of sleeping under the stars and drifting off to the buzz of cicadas and rising to the morning call of native birds.

the island is home to an astounding array of marine and land wildlife. head out for a snorkel and you’ll find yourself in the company of manta rays, reef sharks, and rainbow fish. step out onto the beach at low tide and you’ll discover thousands of tiny animal tracks, made by the island’s turtle population making their way out to sea in the early hours of the morning or swimming out to sea after dusk. visitors on the island have the rare opportunity to bear witness to the full circle of turtle life - from mothers and their eggs to adorable turtle hatchlings.
